The Hollywood Comedy of Remarriage https://artciencia.com/article/view/41662
Stanley Cavell, one of the most original American philosophers of the 20th century, devoted a significant part of his career to thinking about the cinematic experience as a legitimate place for philosophy. In his book Pursuits of Happiness: The Hollywood Comedy of Remarriage, Cavell proposes that certain Hollywood romantic comedies of the 1930s and 40s—so-called marriage comedies—are not just lighthearted love stories, but true meditations on marriage, recognition, and shared life in a modern world.
Alexandre Nascimento Braga Teixeira Copyright (c) 2025 artciencia.com, Revista de Arte, Ciência e Comunicação https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0 https://artciencia.com/article/view/41662 Sun, 18 May 2025 00:00:00 +0100 The invasion of Ukraine as the foundation of a new Iron Curtain in Europe https://artciencia.com/article/view/34103
In 1954, the French National Assembly refused to deepen the European project, voting mainly against the European Political Community and the European Defense Community. The crisis that has arisen from such a refusal constituted a first setback in the European integration project, putting on hold the federalist plan that the two world wars of the 20th century had shown to be as necessary as urgent. The end of the Cold War, the dismemberment of the East and the subsequent expansion to this geographical area of the borders of the European Union, weakened the integrationist purpose, leading even to question, in certain circles, the need to maintain international organizations whose scope went beyond a purely commercial aim. In 2022, however, the invasion of Ukraine by Russia seems to have resurrected ghosts of the past and, at the same time, provoked a profound inflection in this area.
Alexandre M. Whenever we open a book, we travel through real and imaginary places, we mix voices, languages, experiences, we are (in)consciously readers and parcial authors of all eras, because we are all the result of memories that are integrated in a culture that dialogues with other cultures, times, and traditions.
Thus, books allow us, in a real or virtual way, to rescue man from his temporality. Books are our inner voices, the creative memories of our human restlessness! The fruition of the words and images inscribed in them generate restlessness in us, provoking impressions and stirrings that connect us to the past, to other languages made of many reminiscences. Books are 'therapy homes', 'an experiential, restless, and intense encounter with Art, with ourselves, and with others.
As potentiators of the imaginary, books impel us to leisure and to the desire to 'set out to discover' places that potentiate personal transformations, to analyze spiritually or in loco the effective and real commensuration of spaces and times.
Irene Vallejo Moreu in- The Infinite in a Reed -shows us that 'books have overcome the tests of time, they have proved to be long distance runners' despite 'revolutions or the nightmare of our [disturbing] catastrophes. Books tell our stories, keep our ideas alive and project future dreams, other books and many more stories yet to come. Each of us is simply a unique book.
This article seeks to reassess the power of creative fantasy when it is capable of transgressing time. In Recollections of Things to Come, Elena Garro rescues fantasy and presents it as the only resource at hand to transgress Mexican violence, by avoiding femicide or dismantling institutionalized injustice. This article also explores the different levels of gender violence that are present in the novel, as well as shows how three of the characters take responsibility for acting in the face of injustice by changing the story through fantasy. These characters contest and subvert both the real world and political authority. Their fantasy is the producer of concrete facts, the transgressor of realities, and a force that bursts in on the physical world producing changes.
Mário Beja Santos Copyright (c) 2025 artciencia.com, Revista de Arte, Ciência e Comunicação https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0 https://artciencia.com/article/view/25560 Sun, 18 May 2025 00:00:00 +0100 “The most difficult texts are those in which the author experiments with language and rhythm“ https://artciencia.com/article/view/25708
The translator is the character without whom any literature cannot find a place in the world literature. Without translators, foreign writers remain unknown. The Portuguese writer Jose Saramago paid tribute to translators when he said: Writers make national literature, while translators make universal literature.

We are talking to Dana Crăciun about what constitutes a translator’s nightmare and about the difficulties of this very adventurous, exciting enterprise. Dana Crăciun recently translated Rushdie's novel, Quichotte, published by Polirom. We will understand some ingredients of disaster in translation: the laziness of using the dictionary in combination with a shallow editor.
Carmen Neamtu Copyright (c) 2025 artciencia.com, Revista de Arte, Ciência e Comunicação https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0 https://artciencia.com/article/view/25708 Sun, 18 May 2025 00:00:00 +0100
