Arte vs. moral: Oscar Wilde e a inutilidade útil

Oscar Wilde enfatiza o aspecto artístico do trabalho humano, aquele que produz uma variedade de bens úteis e inúteis, desde máquinas até poesia. Todavia, esse trabalho vai além da mera produção de bens. O objectivo deste artigo é compreender as possibilidades infinitas da arte num mundo secular. Será que estamos realmente a viver numa cultura moldada, secular, moderna e neo-dionisíaca, estruturada por paradoxos e centrada no carpe diem? Estamos moldados pelo secular, i.e. pela crise de valores? É o hedonismo uma forma moderna de vida e o desenvolvimento do esteticismo de Wilde? Seguindo um método reflexivo e dialéctico, abordo os comportamentos sociais consumistas para apoiar a ideia de que a estética não pode ser apresentada como uma resposta ética a um mundo vazio de significado, mas como uma consequência de tal vazio, na medida em que o esteticismo da vida moderna é imediato, superficial e efémero.
